Skylight & SunRoof Systems — Materials, Glazing Options & Engineering Details
ALLUKRAFT skylights and SunRoof systems are manufactured using both aluminium and iron (GI/steel) profile options depending on structural and architectural requirements. We offer engineered solutions for residential and commercial projects with a choice of glazing and lightweight roofing options.
Profiles
- Aluminium profiles — extruded aluminium sections for lightweight, corrosion resistant frames; ideal for system-fit installations and easier factory finishing.
- Iron / Steel profiles — hot-rolled or fabricated steel sections for heavy duty, large-span installations; suitable for welding on-site and high-load conditions.
Glazing & roofing options
| Option | Thickness / Type | Recommended use | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tempered glass | 10 mm / 12 mm | Clear roof glazing where safety glazing is not mandatory | High stiffness and clarity; consider laminated where overhead safety is required |
| Laminated glass | 11.52 mm (6+6 PVB) / 13.52 mm (6.38+6 PVB) | Overhead skylights and atria | Retains fragments on breakage; recommended for pedestrian-occupied areas |
| Polycarbonate — solid | 3 mm | Impact-prone or decorative skylights | Very lightweight and impact resistant; lower thermal performance |
| Polycarbonate — multiwall | 8–12 mm (multiwall) | Insulated roof glazing | Better thermal resistance; diffuse light and reduce solar gain |
Finishes & coatings
We offer powder-coating (plain & textured), wood-look PVDF finishes and high-end deco paints for both aluminium and steel profiles. For steel/iron profiles we recommend protective primers followed by textured/deco topcoats for long-term durability.
Installation notes
- Aluminium systems: factory-finished profiles assembled on-site using stainless fasteners, EPDM gaskets and silicone seals.
- Iron systems: can be factory-fabricated and bolted, or delivered for on-site welding for seamless joints (welding recommended for large spans).
- Laminated glazing is recommended for overhead use; consider polycarbonate for impact-prone or lightweight applications.
Motion rails & movement systems
Our retractable and movable roof systems use precision motion-ball and stainless-steel (SS) rail assemblies for smooth, low-noise operation. Typical track profiles are round rails with thicknesses in the 16–25 mm range and are supported on aluminium carrier supports to reduce vibration and dampen noise.
- Motion ball & SS rails: round tracks, 16–25 mm thickness — provide smooth sliding and long life.
- Aluminium supports: used beneath rails to provide soft movement and reduce noise; connectors (GI/iron) are used at joints for robust long-term connections.
- Sealing & durability: EPDM gaskets and silicone pasting at cover/pressure plates are applied to minimize noise and ensure waterproofing at the glazing and track interfaces.
- Motorization compatibility: tracks and rails are designed for both concealed and visible motor units — we offer imported drive units for reliable automation.
Motor types & safety systems
Our motorised skylight and retractable systems support both AC and DC drive units with integrated safety and automation features for reliable, low-noise operation:
- AC & DC motors: AC for high-power/large spans, DC (24V) for compact/smoother operation and safer low-voltage control.
- Safety sensors: obstacle detection, torque limiting and edge sensors to prevent entrapment during movement.
- Rain sensors: automatic close on rainfall to protect interiors and glazing.
- Manual override & backup: manual release mechanisms and optional UPS/backup power for critical installations.
All motor units are specified to work with the selected tracks, sealed details (EPDM/silicone) and control systems so automation does not compromise waterproofing, noise performance or longevity.
Design & recommended build-up (skylights)
For skylight and glass roof installations we commonly use an iron sub-structure with curtain-wall aluminium profiles on top. Typical curtainwall profile: 200×63 mm with cover plate, pressure plate, EPDM gaskets and silicone pasting to ensure waterproofing and a secure glass seal.
Recommended build-up (typical): iron sub-structure → aluminium curtainwall profiles (200×63 mm) → cover plate & pressure plate → EPDM gasket → laminated glass. This arrangement provides structural strength from the iron and factory-finished appearance from aluminium.
Operable glazing & doors
Skylight units can include operable glazed vents and doors up to 3×5 ft that open up to 45°. These are available with manual-assist (gas springs) or motorized actuators (recommended for larger/heavier units). Remote and button control options are supported.
Door vs No-door — Quick comparison
| Characteristic | With Operable Door | Without Door |
|---|---|---|
| Max door size | Up to 3×5 ft | — |

Costs (indicative)
- Aluminium profile structure (curtainwall + assembly): ₹ 440 – 750 / sqft
- Iron sub-structure + assembly: ₹ 1,200 – 1,500 / sqft
- Glass: depends on selected glazing (tempered / laminated) — applied on top of structure and priced separately
Load Bearing & Structural Considerations — Glass Skylight Systems
| Sub-structure | Iron/steel sub-structure recommended for spans over 10 ft; aluminium curtainwall profiles on top |
|---|---|
| Column spacing | Depends on glazing weight and span; typical 6–10 ft for aluminium profiles, 12–16 ft with iron sub-structure |
| Curtainwall profile | 200×63 mm aluminium with cover plate, pressure plate and EPDM gaskets |
| Base plate | 12–18 mm steel base plate for pillar connection; bolted to concrete or steel beam |
| Drainage slope | Minimum 3% fall for overhead glazing to ensure rainwater runoff; integrated channels recommended |
| Wind uplift | Engineered per IS 875 (Part 3); overhead glazing requires retention clips and silicone bond |
| Glazing dead load | Laminated 11.52mm ≈ 2.7 kg/sqft; tempered 12mm ≈ 2.8 kg/sqft; polycarbonate 12mm ≈ 1.3 kg/sqft |
| Recommended height | Site-specific; skylight typically at roof level with minimum 100mm upstand for waterproofing |
All structural sizing and glazing retention details must be confirmed by a qualified structural engineer per site conditions and applicable Indian building codes.

Why Glass Skylight is Better Than Fixed Solid Roofs or Ordinary Windows
Glass skylights bring natural light deep into interiors, reducing energy costs by up to 40% compared to solid roofs requiring artificial lighting. Unlike ordinary windows, overhead skylights provide uniform daylight distribution. Laminated safety glazing retains fragments on breakage, making it safe for overhead use. With motorized operable vents and rain sensors, modern skylight systems combine comfort, safety and automation in a single engineered package.
All glazing and structural calculations are performed to Indian building norms and local wind load factors. Engineering drawings and load sheets can be provided upon request.
